Playing the Euro Lotto
The Euro lotto was originally formulated by the
national lotteries of France, Spain and the UK and was
launched on Saturday The 7th of February 2004. The inaugural EuroMillions draw took place on Friday the 13th of February
2004 in Paris. The UK, France and Spain were the only
European states partaking initially but lotteries from
Austria, Belgium, the Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg,
Portugal and Switzerland also became involved in October
2004.
The Euro lotto or the
Euromillions, as it is often branded,
gathers the ticket sales of the 9 participating European
countries presenting a mammoth
Euro lotto jackpot.
With the number of countries joining the European Union on
the increase, this will clearly lead to new nations
participating in the Euro Millions lotto. An increase in the
quantity of people playing the EuroMillions will lead to a
further growth of the already huge EuroMillions lotto
jackpots.
How To Play
Each participant chooses 5 main numbers from 1 to 50 and 2
“Lucky Star” numbers from 1 to 9. During the draw, 5 main
and 2 lucky star numbers are then chosen at random from two
draw machines containing numbered balls.
How The Prizes Are Allocated
The probability of winning the
Euro lotto jackpot is
a distant 1 in 76 million but the chances of winning any
prize is a fairly decent 1 in 24. If nobody wins the jackpot
in a certain week, it rolls over to the following week which
leads to an ever growing Euro Millions prize fund. New rules
introduced on the 9th of February 2007 restrict the amount
of successive “rollovers” to eleven, with the jackpot
rolling down to lower prize levels in the eleventh draw if
the prize is not won.
The new rules also introduced
Euro lotto "Super
Draws" which happen twice each year and offer jackpots in
the region of £100 million. The difference with “Super
Draws” is that the jackpot must be won during the week of
the draw; consequently, if there is no ticket matching all
the drawn numbers then the top prize will be distributed to
the ticket holder(s) in the next winning prize tier.
Notable Euro Millions Wins
• On the 8th of February 2008, the “Super Draw” jackpot of
€130 million was collected by 16 persons who matched the 5
main numbers and 1 “Lucky Star” number.
• On 10 August 2007, a 40 year old former Royal Mail postal
administrator from Scotland collected a
Euro Millions
jackpot of €52.6 million. To date, this is the biggest
lottery win ever in the United Kingdom.
• On the 17th of November 2006, having rolled over eleven
times, the Euro lotto jackpot reached €183 million and was
divided among twenty lucky ticket purchasers.
